About the Akbash Dogs This dog is a native of western Turkey in the region known as Akbash and is used mostly as a livestock guardian dog. Its name, Akbash, is the turkish word for white head. The dog is not shy by any means and when it is used as a guard dog, it is not really personable with humans even tho it is not known to have a hostile nature. They are a low energy breed since they spend so much time laying with the flocks that they guard all day. The Akbash is intelligent, brave, independent and loyal. They can have hip dysplasia and osteochondritis dissecans however they are not always afflicted with these conditions. They are very large dogs and can live to 11 years. The Akbash is the Turkish equivalent of other white guard breeds from the northern Mediterranean Basin. They were developed 3000 years ago probably by shepherds.
