About the American Staffordshire Terrier
The breed is descended from American dog fighting breeds and they were initally intended to be a show strain of pitbull terrier. American Staffordshire Terriers were first reconized by the American Kennel Club in 1936. These dogs are a member of the Terrier and Mastiff groups. Being decendents from dog-fighting lines, these dogs should be courageous and tenacious. They are friendly with humans but can be agressive with dogs. They don't make good guard dogs since they generally aren't suspicious of strangers.

The Amerian Staffordshire Terrier and the American Pitbull Terrier are closely related, having a common ancestry as recently as the early 1900s. Because of their physical similarities, a pedigree is the only reliable way to dinstinguish between the two breeds. The Staffordshire is less tenacious and less aggressive than the Pitbull.
