About the Australian Shepherd
The breed known as an Australian Shepherd is a great working dog, despite its name, that was developed in the US in the 19th centrury. These dogs are usually called Aussie and is very popular in its native California but is growning in popularity across the world. They have a lot of energy and drive and need jobs to keep them busy. They love to play dogs sports of frisbee and dog ability. Because of the dogs origins, this is not a dog for just anyone. It is an energetic dog that requires lots to do. It can try to herd children and because of its protective instinct and behaviors can be frightening to children and other small animals. If left alone, the Aussie can damage furnishings and yard or property, when they become bored.

Most people believe the Aussies history and origins give it a misleading name. They probably originated in the Basque region nearthe Pyrenees Mountains between Spain and France. Early European settlers took many herding dogs with them when they emigrated to the eastern coast of the US in the 19th century. When shepherds wanted to develop dogs that could handle stock in harsh storms, high arid heat and chilling cold and could think on their own in challenging terrain, the Aussie was born.

These dogs are excellent at dog sports especially herding, dog agility, frisbee and flyball.
