About the Beagle
A Beagle is a medium sized dog and is a member of the hound group and is similar in appearance to a Foxhound but smaller. Beagles are scent hounds and are used primarily for hunting rabbits.

There are two varieties of this breed that are recognized by both the American Kennel Club and the Canadian Kennel Club. There is the 13-inch for hounds less than 13 inches, and the 15-inch for those between 13 and 15 inches. The Kennel Club (UK) and FCI affiliated clubs recognize a single type, with a height of between 13 and 16 inches.

Back in Medieval times, there was a breed called a "pocket beagle", which stood at 8?9 inches. This breed no longer exists, and any claims by breeders to have pocket beagles for sale will usually mean they practiced poor breeding.

Beagles have very good tempers and gentle dispositions. They are intelligent but can be stubborn and may be hard to train. They are loyal and very friendly and are an excellent dog with children. They are playful and energetic and love to go on long walks. They need to remain on a leash unless in a confined area. If loose they will follow a scfent endlessly or tag along with other dogs. They are a healthy breed and will often live for 12- 15 years. They can have some ear problems and their eyelashes can grow into the eye. Obesity can be a problem if overfed. Some Beagles are prone to congenital heart disease.

Beagles (or their ancestors) appear to have been used for hare hunting in England as early as the reign of Edward III. First mention of the beagle in English literature by name dates from 1475. Beagles were originally used for hunting, and still are in some places. Beagling has been referred to as "the poor person's foxhunting,"

The Beagle has a superb nose and, despite their self-willed temperament, are sometimes used as sniffer dogs for drug detection. More often, though, they are the breed of choice of the United States Department of Agriculture to detect food items in luggage being transported into the U.S.
