About the Bloodhound The Bloodhound is a large breed of dog and famed for its ability to follow a scent many days old, over vast distances. This dog is used as a police dog to track missing people, fleeing suspects, or escaped prisoners. They are a breed that is mellow, cheerful, relaxed dog. It is laid-back which makes it somewhat difficult to obedience train, however it can be done. Their life expectancy is only about 10-12 years. The Bloodhound is apt to have hip dysplasia and bloat. The scent trackers were developed in lowland Europe at the St Hubert Monastery and in Britain. The Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius mentioned this dog in the history of the Roman Empire. The name Bloodhound comes from careful breeding in the middle ages, resulting in it being known by the 14th century as the "Blooded hound" or Bloodhound, hound of noble ancestry.
