About the Border Collie Border Collies are a hard-working breed of dog that originated in the border country of England and Scotland. They are highly intelligent herding dogs. They can be neurotic or destructive if not given enough to do. Lots of farms use them all over the world to help in handling livestock. They are very protective of their own family and affectionate. The family that chooses this breed will need to find things for the dog to do. They will try to herd family members, cats, squirrels, bicycles, cars or anything that moves. You will need to take them to training classes and for long brisk walks. They love to participate in dog sports such as flyball, frisbie, and a place where they can run and meet you or have lots of activity. Border Collies are often used to chase wild birds from airport runways, golf courses and other public and private areas. Hip dysplasia is widespread among purebreds. Elbow dysplasia is also common.
