About the Chow Chow The Chow Chow is a breed of dog that originated in China. They are now commonly kept as a companion dog even with a reputation for bering a willful and independent breed. They can be aloof. Chows may be prone to his dysplasia due to their heavy-set. Being a unique type of dog, they are thought to be one of the oldest recognizable breeds. A bas-relief from 150 BC includes a hunting dog similar in appearance. DNA analysis confirms this is one of the oldest breeds of dog.
