About the Newfoundland Newfoundlands are large, usually black, working dogs from Newfoundland. They have sweet dispositions, they are loyal and they have natural water rescue tendencies. Newfoundlands are often nicknamed the Gentle Giant and Natures babysitter. They are extremely protective of children and are very smart. Even puppies tend to be calm. Even though they have a deep bark they are not good guard dogs. They are too large for apartment living. Their origin is really uncertain but they are known to be working dogs on the island of Newfoundland as early as AD 1000. They helped pull in fishermans nets. They do have a tendency for hip dysplasia. The dog was a member of the famous Lewis and Clark expedition. They are known to be a very "drooly" dog. In 2004, a Newfoundland Champioin Darbydale's All Rise Pouchcove took the Westminister Kennel Club Dog Shows prize for Best in Show. Advertise your site or business here..
