Portuguese Water Dogs

Baby Dog Names continuing to provide awesome dog names plus a variety of other helpful dog related info.

Known for centuries along Portugal's coast line and prized for its strength, spirit and soundness, the Portuguese Water Dog is a loyal worker and companion and great family pet. Medium-sized and robust, the breed possesses a waterproof coat and the ability to swim all day. Its coat can be curly or wavy and is black, white, or brown, or combinations of black or brown with white.

If you love the water, and if you are allergic to dogs, but want a dog to swim with you, look at the Portugese Water Dog. A medium-sized dog who can live in an apartment as long as it gets its daily walk/jog (not stroll). Or if you have a home with a large yard this is a terrific dog to have. This dog needs to be challenged both physically and mentally as they are highly intelligent. Great with children and household pets (it may find your cat a curiosity until they can socialize with one another). Its temperament is steady and it just wants to be a part of your living experience. Very intelligent, and it will entertain you with its antics. Sheds little but will need to be brushed regularly. An athletic, active dog breed, the Portuguese Water Dog requires daily vigorous exercise. He is very intelligent and responds well to obedience training. His profuse coat is hypoallergenic. It may be kept in the lion clip (the coat on the hindquarters and muzzle are clipped to the skin) or the retriever clip (the entire coat is clipped to one inch in length and follows the outline of the dog).

Note: Michelle Obama says America's first family is considering getting a Portuguese water dog as one of the daughters is allergic to dogs. The first lady will be looking to rescue a specimen of the breed that is "old enough" and a "match" for her family. "Temperamentally they're supposed to be pretty good," she said. "From the size perspective, they're sort of middle of the road -- it's not small, but it's not a huge dog. And the folks that we know who own them have raved about them. So that's where we're leaning."
