About the Yorkshire Terrier
Yorkshire Terriers, or better known as Yorkie, is a breed of small dog, one of many toy dog breeds. The Yorkie, although it is a toy breed, still keeps much of its Terrier ancestry in terms of personality. They are intelligent, independent and spunky. Males are very territorial and have a disregard for the limitations of their size. They will often attack a larger dog even tho there is a size disadvantage. They get along well with cats and love to play together in groups. Since the Yorkie is so small, they are easily injured, so even tho they get along with children, the kids can unintentionally injure the dog. They tend to be more difficult to train than some of their canine cousins.

The Yorkshire Terriers tend to develop cataracts in their old age and there is also the possibility of Trachea collapse.

Supposidly the Yorkie is the product of comingling of Scottish and English terriers. There are a lot of different types of terriers in their Scottish backgrounds as well as possibly the Maltese. The original Yorkie was know as Broken Haired Scotch Terrier. In 1870, the breed was renamed the Yorkshire Terrier, after the county of Yorkshire, England where it is believed they originated.
